Seed Beads

seed beads_5276-EditI have a large collection of mixed seed beads. Not sure when they became a random mixture. It’s how they have been since I received the tupperware full, well 3 actually. I wanted to make jewelry and I thought maybe having each color separate would be a good idea.

seed beads_5274The execution of this idea is another matter. I’m sure there are some sort of tools that can be used to make this much easier, but right now I’m using the round-about backwards way that gets the job done, but takes a really long time.

seed beads_5273I sit at night watching TV(from the DVR (almost to July!)) and stringing beads onto a wire and drop them into a canister. Only problem was when I forgot to hold the beads at the end they slid off the wire and all over the floor. Now that I have done that, it seems curling up the end might be the solution so I don’t have to pick beads out of the carpet, again.

seed beads_5278So I will continue on my tedious journey of separating all the colors. When I am done sorting, I am hoping to have more inspiration to start working on some beaded jewelry.

What you can use old news (newspapers) for

This might be something that is ongoing.

Right now my uses of newspaper is a super list of 2 things I use old newspaper/ads for while crafting and gardening.

newspaper in garden1. You may have seen the use of it in my garden. I’m not sure how well the inks mix with dirt, but I’m hoping it’s not too bad and won’t cause more problems than the GMOs I inadvertently ingest.

2. Keeping old newspapers around for crafting is always good. With all intentions of not getting glues everywhere I’m just not successful. So I now coat everything with newspaper and spill away. I’m sure it would be great while painting and such as well, really any art project. Who am I kidding you probably have a stack higher than mine of papers ready to be spilled on.

3. Blocking a bee hive that is in an old swing set. As much as I don’t want to, they keep attacking my husband when he tries to mow.  If only there was a good way to communicate with bees that we don’t want to hurt them, just mow around their house.

Anyway, someday I may start adding photos and make this much more exciting to look at. I am trying to do more crafts. But I ran into a snag with my last project when I gave it as a gift before I took a photo. So I took the process of making it and then nothing at the end. :/

I’ll get a hang of this blogging thing someday.

Cross Stitch-An update

It’s been over a year since my last post of my cross-stitch. Honestly it hasn’t gotten much farther. Many days my husband tells me I have my goals set a little too high with all my projects. I have decided that I will spend at least a couple of evenings this week working on it. I have a couple of photo events this weekend and still have photos from last weekend to go through, so next week will be a photo week. This week will be TV and cross stitch. Sounds like a plan to me!

Cross stitch-not just an old lady craft

Angel progressI’ve been doing counted cross stitch for years. In the last few years I’ve done a couple of pretty big cross stitches. I think that I got tired of doing them for a while. I have been working on this one for at least a year now since I have so many other projects I have started.

I find cross stitch to be fairly relaxing even though I am made fun of for doing an “old lady” craft. It may not be the most exciting thing, but I think people like the finished products. I hope this will be done eventually I think I have a Winnie the Pooh up next.

I will be balancing this with my other projects and cooking. I hope to be making some yummy bars either tomorrow or this weekend. If my camera decides to tag along I hope to have a new recipe up, as long as it tastes good.

10/1/12 update: This cross stitch, months later is still about the same amount completed. I have tried in the last week or so to do one line when I sit down. Eventually this will get done. I have a pile of kits just waiting to be worked on. I have this lofty goal of getting organized with all my crafting stuff. Right now I have 3 different brands/models of drawer systems going so nothing really fits well together. I am hoping once I figure out all the crafts and supplies I have I can get it all sorted and organized and maybe I will have more motivation to finish a project once in a while.

Maybe someday I’ll have to take a vacation day from the full time job and just work on crafts all day. That sounds like something fun don’t you think?

Mirror, Mirror

I have this full length mirror from college. It is pretty simple with just a black frame on it. It worked well for a dorm, but I didn’t need it in my house. I decided that maybe some glass etching would work to make this mirror more of a piece of art than the clutter it was becoming.

I went to the store to get the glass etching stuff. (Armour Etch if you really want to know). And I needed some stencils too. So I found some that included words like “dream” and “believe”, you know the uplifting ones. There were also border looking designs too.

I used tape to mark off where I wanted to place the designs and words in a balanced manner. And that also helps to keep things even across the mirror.

This is what I ended up with. We have this tall wall at the top of the stairs from our little landing at the front door. It helps open up the space and is now a mirror that serves a little purpose as a mirror and mostly serves as a nice decorative piece.

It’s pretty simple and if you have a few weekends and maybe a couple of evenings you can re-purpose an old mirror. I have also seen this done on bathroom mirrors to liven up the bathroom. It works best on the mirrors that are just attached to the wall and take up a lot of the space. If you have a small mirror I wouldn’t recommend covering up what little space you do have to see yourself when getting prettied up.
