St. Louis Cardinals

The 32nd card of 2019 is now complete. I’m not sure if 32 has any significance for the Cardinals or not, but maybe. This cross stitch took longer than expected and has way more errors than expected.

After a couple of days I had to get out my “ICE” light setup. I don’t have a real ice light, so my off brand has to be plugged in at all times. This means not only is there a light stand by me, but an extension cord to trip over as well. 22 count is so tiny and my eyesight seems to be getting worse as I stare at these for longer and longer hours. Bright lights and working outside seem to be best for contrast to really see where the holes are.

unfinished, pre backstitch

This pattern is from the same book as the New York Yankees pattern came from. Unlike the Yankees there are several Cardinals fans in the family. And as I have been doing, only one is chosen to receive it. This time it is for my uncle and godfather. My cousin asked if it was for her dad as he is a huge fan, but sadly it was selected for someone else.

Since I am always on a time crunch with these I decided that as soon as I could I would start the backstitching. This turned into a bit of a fun venture as on the Cardinal I had mis-counted at some point. Since the pattern is in black and white I also got messed up with the backstitching around the legs.

the bottom and top focus

As you can see some of the baseball stitches are not in red. I noticed this afterwards and well really couldn’t go tearing everything out. This card is going to be my most unique yet with the sheer amount of mistakes and cat furs sewn into it.

Just the logo

I’m sure my uncle will still enjoy it. If anything my mistake around the legs can be the stitches in “shadow”. Now it’s time to begin the next one as I have no time to waste.

There’s always that one person in the family who stands out. In our family this person married in a few years back. Until now our family has been split into two camps. St. Louis Cardinals and Kansas City Royals. Since the new cousin, there is now a New York Yankees fan. He is serious too. No matter what game and who he is with you will find him wearing his Yankees gear.

Since I’m not a huge sports fan, I’m more blend in with the crowd than stand out supporting the other team. Probably because I can’t explain/defend or otherwise justify to other die hard fans why I don’t match them. Honestly I usually don’t even wear any gear that would show loyalties.

In case you are oh so curious, I do favor the Royals as they are my brother’s favorite team, and I happen to live where their minor league team plays.

beginning a new project

So the card was created to show him that I do pay attention to the team he likes and will stitch their logo. My mom’s friend let me take her official MLB cross stitch book from ages ago (so logos are outdated) which is how I was able to create this card.

The background is wallpaper. Can you imagine that on your wall?? I can’t, but hey to each their own. The brick really seemed fitting for baseball. I think most pro baseball fields have at least some brick making up their building, or could just be nostalgia in my own head making that up.

For the fabric I felt that off white was the best choice, not only because the baseball was in white but also stitching on 22 count, well it’s hard enough to see. The contrast isn’t huge, but enough to show the difference between baseball and old timey fabric.

I completely forgot to photograph the “finished” piece before backstitching. If you follow my Snapchat you can see real-time my progress on the now named #cardproject2019
